New Fisheries Monitoring Centre was declared opened today to monitor Sri Lankan fishing vessels using Vessel Monitoring System (VMS). The opening ceremony was held under patronage of Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda and Visiting Australian Minister for Home Affairs Clare O’ Neil. Australia donated over 4,000 VMS at a cost of Five million Australian dollars in a bid to locate illegal boats taking asylum seekers to Australia.
