A weighty proposal that a certain former army chief be appointed to a top security post that had fallen vacant had reached Number One’s office.

The nominee was a commander who had played a lead role in defeating the LTTE terrorist outfit.

Many parties concerned readily welcomed the proposal. But a secretarial one of a main political party opposed the proposed appointee. Incidentally, this secretarial one is a close confidant of Number One. Making his objection to the appointment, he told Number One that he had received information to the effect that the former army chief in question, a person from his own district, was planning to contest the upcoming general polls from an opposition party.

So, he also made a strong appeal to Number One not to appoint him to the top security post and drew a positive response.

Meanwhile, knowledgeable sources say it is a certainty that the former army chief will enter the fray from Wayamba at the coming polls.
