The Outgoing Curator of the Global Shapers Colombo Hub - Mevan Peiris, has been elected to the Advisory Council of the worldwide Global Shapers Community at the World Economic Forum.

The Global Shapers Community is an initiative of the World Economic Forum headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and is a network of inspiring young people under the age of 30 working together to address local, regional and global challenges. With more than 8,000 members, the Community spans 402 city-based hubs in 171 countries.

Mevan is the first Sri Lankan to be elected to this position, and is among a 40 member Advisory Council, representing the 8,000+ strong membership from around the world. On Saturday July 13, the Global Shapers Community announced the Advisory Council members that would serve for a two year term till July 2021.

The Global Shapers Advisory Council exists to ensure members are directly involved in the community’s governance and operates as one team under five specialized areas of action. These are Hub Engagement & Growth, Impact & Knowledge, Governance and Accountability, Elections & Leadership and Alumni Network Engagement.

Specifically, Advisory Council members are expected to influence the strategic development of the community, increase transparency, ensure diversity, define success goals for the community‘s activities and facilitate the relationship between hubs, Global Shapers HQ in Geneva and the Global Shapers Foundation Board to reinforce the community’s distributed leadership model.

Mevan will be working alongside 7 others to oversee the on-boarding, engagement and activities of the Global Shapers’ Alumni Network, a digital-first, self-driven initiative for Shapers by Shapers.

Sri Lanka has two Global Shaper Hubs - Colombo & Kandy and incidentally have jointly won the bid to host the regional gathering of Shapers titled “Shape South Asia 2019” in October of this year, where over 150 Global Shapers from the region will participate in a 4 day immersive conference. Hosting this conference will be an excellent show of resilience and a message of positivity to the rest of the world that despite recent events, Sri Lanka is once again ready to host high level MICE Tourism events in the country.
