Colombo, September 21 (Daily Mirror)- President Ranil Wickremesinghe will peacefully transfer power to the newly elected President if he loses, National People’s Power (NPP) Presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.
Speaking to the media after casting his vote, he said this is the election which would be a turning point in Sri Lanka's history.
"We have had elections so far to topple governments, form governments and elect leaders. But, this election will be a turning point in Sri Lanka's history," he said.
Dissanayake requested the people to maintain peace after the victory without resorting to any violations or clashes.
"Everyone has a right to vote for the candidate of their choice. We need to uphold that right. We need a new political culture in the country," he said.
Responding to a question, he said "The President will tranfer power democratically. I do not think he will act against democracy. I hope he will transfer power to the newly elected President and retire," he said.
