Considering the candidates affected by the prevailing adverse weather conditions, the Examinations Department has decided to postpone the 2024 GCE Advanced Level (A/L) examinations till December 3, Examinations Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara announced.
Addressing the media at a special media briefing held at the department, he stated that the exams will resume on December 4 (Wednesday).
Accordingly, the examinations will not be held for six days starting from November 27.
Initially, it was decided to suspend the examinations for three days, ending tomorrow (29).
The Commissioner General mentioned that a total of 330,894 individuals from 98,635 families have been affected by the prevailing adverse weather conditions. Of these, 16,553 people from 5,305 families have been relocated to 183 safe locations across the country. He further noted that several examination candidates are among the affected and are currently taking shelter in safe locations.
"According to the revised timetable, the subjects originally scheduled for December 4 will be conducted as planned. The Chemistry first paper, Technology Science first paper and Drama and Theatre first paper (in three languages) will be held in the morning, while the Political Science first paper will take place in the afternoon," he said.
The changes to the timetable are as follows:
The Examinations Department will take measures to distribute the updated examination timetable to all candidates. The new timetable will be printed in a different color to distinguish it from the original timetable, which was printed on white paper. Candidates will also be notified through newspaper notices and other media channels.
Candidates will be able to download their updated timetables from the official website of the Examinations Department.
No examinations will be held on December 24, 25 and 26, due to the festive season. All examination coordinating centers will remain closed on these days.
Regarding question papers, the Commissioner General assured that safety measures are in place to secure all question papers at the centres. Immediate steps will be taken to recall all question papers to the examination centres, if necessary.
