Another postal strike in the offing if no response by June 24

Colombo, June 14 (Daily Mirror) - After the 24-hour postal trade union strike, the United Postal Trade Unions Front (UPTUF) has decided to resume another countrywide trade union action on June 24 if a favorable response is not received from the Finance Ministry, UPTUF convener Chinthaka Bandara said.

He told the Daily Mirror that they had concluded their 24-hour trade union action last night, and during the strike they had a discussion with the Additional Secretary of the Finance Ministry.

He said that the Ministry will take action to fulfill their demands within a month. But the decisions were given verbally, and that they cannot trust them.

However, the union had told the Ministry to provide a solution by June 24 and also told them that another countrywide strike was scheduled to be launched.

The union demanded to fill more than 6,000 existing vacancies in the postal service.

However, no recruitments have been made for any grades in the postal sector since 2018.

"At least 500 people are working as acting service officers across the country, including in subpost offices, and nearly 1,200 are serving as acting duty officers. However, no decision has been made to permanently appoint the acting staff members so far," he said.
