Responding to the explosion of a regulation tank at Aruwakkalu sanitary landfill on Monday, the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry said it could be an act of sabotage.

In a statement, the Ministry said the explosion occurred at about 8.30 pm and it destroyed the outer surface completely of the regulation tank which is used to store leachate.

“The investigations carried out so far suggest the possibility of an act of sabotage. Regardless of this incident, the activities at the sanitary landfill will be carried out as usual without delay,” it said.

It said no life was harmed in the explosion and the investigations are already being carried out with the assistance of a group of police officers and technological specialists from various universities.

“Rumors referring to the explosion as a result of a methane gas leak are not true. The tanks are well protected with a thick concrete cover and therefore it is impossible for a methane gas leak to cause such damage,” the Ministry said.

It said the construction company will ensure that all repairs will be carried out as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the explosion was heard by people in nearby areas such as Karathew, Serakkuliya and Wanathavilluwa.

Due to the explosion, 29 trippers carrying garbage towards Aruwakkalu had been sent back to Colombo.
The government analyst also arrived at Auwakkalu for further investigations.
