Cabinet nod to cancel 2023 LG polls nominations

The Cabinet has granted approval to cancel the nominations previously called for the Local Government elections scheduled for 2023, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced today.

The Cabinet Spokesman pointed out that at a meeting of political party leaders on November 25, 2024 attended by leaders of recognized political parties, it was decided to cancel the 2023 nominations and call for new ones for the upcoming local government elections.

Further, in a move aimed at revising the election process, the Cabinet has also decided to amend the Local Government Act to facilitate the calling of fresh nominations.
