Chief selector issues a warning to underperforming stars

Daily Mirror (Colombo) - Following inconsistent performances by certain senior players in the Sri Lanka national team, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) today issued a warning to senior players, emphasising that it is now their responsibility to step up and deliver match-winning performances for the team. 

“We have several players who have been with the team for at least six or seven years. It is time for them to step up and consistently win games for Sri Lanka. They should have developed that ability by now. If we do not see improved performances soon, the same issues will persist even after the 2027 World Cup,” Chairman of SLC Selection Committee Upul Tharanga said.

He said that now is the time for senior players to take charge and lead by example for the younger players on how to win matches. 

“Consistency in performance has been lacking. While we understand that not every batsman can score in every match, they should aim for consistent performances in at least seven out of 10 matches,” Tharanga told reporters in Colombo.
 
When questioned about the change in captaincy, Tharanga said that Wanindu Hasaranga was appointed captain with a longterm plan in mind, but they were surprised by Hasaranga’s decision to resign. 

He said SLC has not yet appointed a vicecaptain for the upcoming Indian series. He said they believe the presence of several senior players in the squad can offer guidance to Charith Asalanka when needed.
 
“Some players in the squad have previously served as captains. So, we can’t name them for the vice-captaincy. That’s why we haven’t named one for this series. We will decide soon on the vice-captaincy. However, we believe Charith will have strong support from our senior players during the tour,” he said. 

Regarding Angelo Mathews’ absence from the squad, Tharanga explained the decision was to explore options for the next T20 World Cup, prioritising the crucial all-rounder role. “We have talented young all-rounders like Chamika Karunaratne, Chamindu Wijesinghe and Chamindu Wickremesinghe. It’s time to give them opportunities and prepare for the future,” Tharanga said.

Tharanga emphasised a systematic selection process for the team, advocating for patience with young players to settle in. 

Meanwhile, Interim Coach Sanath Jayasuriya expressed his commitment to delivering his best during the upcoming white-ball series against India and the subsequent Test tour of England. 

Despite his temporary role, Jayasuriya drew confidence from his 22 years of experience with the Sri Lankan Team as a player and consultant. 

“I have been a consultant with the Sri Lanka Team for many years and was part of the team for 22 years as a player. I believe my extensive experience, both as a player and working alongside many coaches, equips me well to fulfil my duties as an interim coach,” he said. 

Speaking on team strengths, Jayasuriya praised the bowling unit while aiming to strengthen the batting and all-rounder departments. He said as part of the plan, they have brought Zubin Bharucha, the High-Performance Director of the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals to conduct a week-long batting session for all the players. 

On disciplinary matters, Jayasuriya stressed the importance of player discipline during his interim tenure. “I expect discipline from players while I serve as interim coach,” he asserted. 

Commenting regarding the delayed appointment of a permanent head coach, Jayasuriya said that the selection process is ongoing by SLC with applications still under consideration. 

Meanwhile, looking ahead to the batting order for the first T20I on Saturday, Tharanga said Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis are likely to open with Kusal Janith or Dinesh Chandimal for the number three position. 

He said Dushmantha Chameera who was named in the 16-member squad has been ruled out due to injury. 

“Chameera’s medical report was received on Tuesday confirming that the player will miss the entire India series,” he said. 

Meanwhile, fast bowler Asitha Fernando included in the Sri Lankan squad as a replacement for Chameera. Sri Lanka will face India in three T20Is and three ODIs from July 27 to August 7.
