Colombo, October 09 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities have sounded the alarm over the spread of a viral disease called 'Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome' among pigs, hogs and boars in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Director of Health at the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Dr. Tharaka Prasad, said the disease is spreading like an outbreak across multiple areas.
"Areas including Yala, Chilaw and Balapitiya have been identified, and precautionary measures are in place to prevent the further spread of the disease," he pointed out.
When asked whether humans are affected by consuming the flesh of infected animals, Dr. Prasad stated that there is no evidence of the disease affecting humans.
However, he admitted that the issue could have a significant impact on farms leading to lower production.
