Colombo, August 27 (Daily Mirror) - A spokesperson for the Indian High Commission in Colombo debunked a social media report in circulation that National People’s Power (NPP) presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake is set to win the elections, according to an Indian diplomatic cable.
The social media report said, “According to this cable, a secret survey conducted through various methods suggests that Anura Kumara is set to secure a comfortable majority. This assessment comes just 30 days before the election and highlights several key indicators pointing towards Kumara’s growing support,
the report said.
The cable reveals that the NPP leader's popularity has surged, positioning him as the frontrunner.
“Survey results indicate that Kumara is well ahead of his competitors, suggesting widespread public support. This development is seen as a crucial indicator that he holds a significant lead as the election date approaches. The survey highlights a steady increase in the NPP’s overall support base. This growth reflects strong voter confidence in Kumara’s leadership and policies, contributing to the party’s momentum in the final stretch of the campaign. In contrast, the survey suggests a decline in support for the SJB (Samagi Jana Balawegaya). A notable shift has been observed, with several SJB members reportedly switching allegiance back to the UNP (United National Party). This trend has weakened SJB’s numbers and cast doubts on their ability to compete effectively in the election.
The defection of key SJB members back to the UNP is seen as a critical factor influencing the electoral landscape. This shift not only diminishes SJB’s chances but also strengthens the UNP’s position, which could have strategic implications for the overall political dynamics in the country,” the report said.
Asked for a comment in this regard, the Indian High Commission said, “We have seen reports circulating on social media attributed to the Indian High Commission. Such reports are unfounded and baseless.
