Colombo, September 12 (Daily Mirror) -  The Election Commission has announced measures to ensure the security of ballot boxes during the upcoming presidential election.

This follows concerns raised by politicians and candidates about the safe transport of ballot boxes to counting centers after polling.

To address these concerns, the Commission will continue the practice of transporting ballot boxes in transparent bags, secured with locks. In addition, after polling ends, a signed form by polling staff or agents will be attached to the ballot box, with copies sent to the counting center and polling agents.

"Candidates' representatives are allowed to follow the vehicle carrying the ballot boxes from polling stations to the final police checkpoint near the counting center. If needed, candidates can also station their authorized agents along the route between the last checkpoint and the counting center. However, not all candidates will be able to follow the vehicles due to practical limitations," it said.

The Commission further notes said authorized representatives must submit a detailed report to District Election Offices three days before polling, specifying the polling station, vehicle details, and the name of the representative.

Moreover, one counting agent will be allowed in the counting hall starting at 3:00 pm, with the rest of the agents permitted at the premises from the same time, the commission added.
