Funds for LG polls can be released only in installments: Treasury informs EC

Treasury Officials have informed the Commission of Elections that it can only release funds for the local government election in installments, an official from the Finance Ministry on conditions of anonymity said today.

The treasury officials informed this when they met the members of the commission including its chairman Nimal Punchihewa and Commissioner General Saman Ratnayake last morning. 

"The treasury officials said they cannot determine a time period in which they could release funds through installments," sources said. 

The treasury, also informed the election commission that welfare expenditure would have to be slashed to make funds available for local polls.(Yohan Perera)
