The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) today requested the Government to appoint a commission to commence investigations over the illegal activities of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) Chairman Prof. Harendra De Silva.

Speaking at a media briefing, GMOA Secretary Dr. Shenal Fernando said former Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne had appointed his close associates to the SLMC, causing disrepute to it.

“The SLMC is a Government entity which was established under the medical Ordinance to ensure standards of the doctors,” he said.

The subject minister was given authority to appoint five members including the president to the SLMC and Dr. Senaratne misusing his authority appointed his close associates to the Council, the Doctor said, adding that this move would be an issue with regard to the international recognition of doctors with SLMC registration.

Therefore, it is essential to remove the former Minister’s personal associates from posts in the SLMC as they are continuing the agenda of the former minister, Dr. Fernando added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
