Government approval moves up, but only to an extreme low level of 10%, reveals survey

• In June only 3% said they approved the ways of the government
• Marginal improvement in overall satisfaction at 7%
• Economic confidence score at -78%, up from -96% in June

The latest ‘Mood of the Nation’ poll by Colombo-based think-tank Verité Research reveals that government approval has moved up, yet still at an extremely low level of 10 percent.
This is the same as it was in January 2022. The poll carried out in October found that 7 percent more of the sample population said they approved the way in which the government is working when compared with the results of the June 2022 poll. 
In June, only 3 percent said they approved the ways of the government. Although an improvement in positive sentiments, still, only 10 percent said they agree with the government’s ways of doing things.

A marginal improvement is also seen in the overall satisfaction of the way things are going in Sri Lanka. While satisfaction is at a low level of 7 percent, it is an improvement from 6 percent in January, and 2 percent in June.
The economic confidence score stands at -78 percent. In June it was -96 percent, whereas in January it was -83 percent. The economic confidence was deduced by posing to the sample of population multiple choice questions on the condition and trajectory of the economy.

The score can range from negative (-) 100 to positive (+) 100. A score above zero means more people see the economic conditions positively rather than negatively. If everyone thinks that the economy is in a poor condition (instead of good or excellent), and everyone also thinks it is getting worse (rather than better), then the score will be a (-) 100. 
In October 2022, 0.5 percent rated the economic condition as excellent, 4.8 percent rated it as good; and 16.2 percent rated it as getting better. 
The latest poll is the third round of the Gallup Style ‘Mood of the Nation’ survey. It aims to assess the approval, satisfaction, and confidence of the nation in relation to the government, the country, and the economy. 

The poll was conducted as a part of the syndicated survey instrument by Verité Research. This instrument also provides other organisations the opportunity to survey the sentiments of Sri Lanka. 
The poll is based on an island-wide nationally representative sample of responses from 1,018 Sri Lankan adults, conducted in October 2022. The sample and methodology were designed to ensure a maximum error margin of under 3 percent at 95 percent confidence interval. The polling partner was Vanguard Survey (Pvt) Ltd.
