Colombo, July 12 (Daily Mirror) - Wanindu Hasaranga, who has often faced criticism for the team's disappointing exit in the T20 World Cup and his attitude, as well as some disciplinary issues, said that this attitude has helped him overcome challenges and inspire himself to improve.
"I have at all times expressed emotion on the field and such attitude has helped me overcome challenges and to inspire myself to do better. This is in no way aimed to offend anyone," he said.
He said that any remarks made in frustration regarding performances on or off the field were never meant personally.
"If my words have offended anyone, I offer my sincere apologies," Hasaranga said.
Hasaranga announced his resignation from the Sri Lanka men’s T20I captaincy yesterday.
In his letter of resignation to Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, Hasaranga said that stepping down from the captaincy is in the best interests of Sri Lanka Cricket, opting to continue serving the team as a player.
He lamented Sri Lanka's performance at the recent T20 World Cup, noting, "Sri Lanka’s early exit at the T20 World Cup is extremely disappointing to me as the Captain and for the entire team."
Despite believing that the team was well-prepared, Hasaranga acknowledged their failure to meet expectations, particularly highlighting the close match against Bangladesh that ended in defeat.
Acknowledging his responsibility as captain, Hasaranga apologised to the nation and Sri Lanka Cricket for not delivering better results.
"The team and I have let our country down," he admitted.
Looking ahead, Hasaranga emphasised his commitment to contributing as a player, relinquishing the captaincy to focus exclusively on his game.
"I feel my performances at my peak was extremely helpful to bring about victories to our nation," he said, expressing his intention to maintain high standards and support the team in any capacity.
