SLPP Leader and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa today pledged to prevent the influx of drugs into villages and assured to take action against drug smugglers when the SLPP comes to power.

Addressing a presidential election rally held in Mahiyanganaya, the former President said there was adequate punishment which can be meted out to drug traffickers without executing them.

"We will give the necessary punishment to drug traffickers. They may even leave the country when we come to power. We have to stop the influx of heroin because we can't allow the country to be destroyed," Mr.Rajapaksa said.

He said the incumbent government was known for its inability in initiating development projects but declare opening the projects launched by the previous Rajapaksa Government.

"For four years the government destroyed the country instead of building it. Sold all the projects we launched, we created the harbour and it was sold. The airport is also up for sale. This government constructed a new airport and it seems only seaplanes can be landed there since it's been inundated. The government keeps blaming us and opening our projects," he said.
