Colombo, Dec 09 (Daily Mirror) - Minister of Agriculture K.D. Lal Kantha should walk the talk and introduce new laws to enable landowners and farmers to take action against animals that destroy crops, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Nalin Bandara Jayamaha said today.

“Legal provisions should be provided to allow shooting at various animals that destroy crops, but only to chase them away without killing them,” MP Jayamaha told a media briefing today.

“I was ridiculed when I proposed that guns should be given to farmers and landowners to chase the animals away. It was Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne who ridiculed me when I came up with the proposal during the election campaign. However, Minister Lal Kantha himself proposed that people be allowed to take action against animals that destroy their crops. The Minister should put this into action by bringing in laws that provide legal provisions for people to use guns to chase the animals away,” he added.
