Colombo, July 31 (Daily Mirror) - The New Zealand government has agreed to support the growth of Sri Lanka's dairy industry.
Following a meeting with Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, New Zealand High Commissioner to Sri Lanka David Pine said that New Zealand will assist in promoting Sri Lanka's dairy industry.
They also discussed the cultivation of avocados, pineapples and mangoes in Sri Lanka. Currently, avocados, which are in high demand in the foreign market, are being cultivated in the central hills of Sri Lanka.
Sixty percent of Sri Lanka's milk requirement is still met through imports. To increase domestic milk production, it is necessary to introduce new technology, import high-quality semen and apply advanced techniques in dairy farming.
The High Commissioner mentioned that the New Zealand government can provide all the necessary technical support for milk production in Sri Lanka, and these measures will be implemented in consultation with the New Zealand government.
He also agreed to provide opportunities for exporting pineapples and mangoes from Sri Lanka to New Zealand.
