One of the main priorities of the government would be to consolidate the confidence placed by the people in the media and hence the newly formed SLPP government under no circumstances would put restrictions on the media or suppress it, Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.
He even did not like to discuss any kind of control or monitoring of the media with anybody or any establishment, Minister Rambukwella added.
Minister Rambukwella assumed duties yesterday at the Mass Media and Information Ministry at Narahenpita amidst chanting of ‘Seth Pirith’ by the Maha Sangha after performing religious rites of all faiths.
He told media personalities at the ceremony that he expected that the state and private media would engage in a competitive but healthy and ethical media culture that would disseminate the best to readers, listeners and viewers.
“However, the print and electronic media need to have only one goal, one objective and one policy which is to promote democracy, rule of law and prosperity of the country and people,” Minister Rambukwella stressed.(Sandun A Jayasekera)
