One dead, several injured as van crashes on to tree in Galgamuwa

Galgamuwa, May 26 (Daily Mirror) - One person was killed and at least 13 others were injured when a van skidded off the road and crashed on to a tree in Galgamuwa on the Padeniya-Anuradhapura Road early this morning.

Police said at least 15 persons were travelling in the van on their way to Anuradhapura when the vehicle skidded off the road near Mee Oya, as the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.

According to police, one person died at the scene, while 13 others, including 7 women, were admitted to the Galgamuwa Hospital. Seven individuals who were in critical condition were transferred to the Anuradhapura Hospital for further treatment.

The deceased has been identified as a 69-year-old resident of Embilipitiya.

The Galgamuwa Police are investigating into the incident.
