The political journey of the National Peoples Movement (NPM) would not end after the November 16, NPM presidential candidate and former Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake said they had decided to move forward ahead of parliamentary elections.
Addressing the inaugural news briefing at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute after obtaining the candidacy, he said what distinguished them from the existing politicians was that they had come to serve the public rather being served by people.
“The political culture of 71 years has not led the country to move forward but to backwards. That culture has not made any sort of progressive strategy to develop the country,” Senanayake said.
“That’s the very reason why I came forward as an independent candidate representing NPM to make a change in the country,” Senanayake added.
When asked about the remarks made by presidential aspirant Nagananda Kodituwakku that it was because of Mr. Senanayake that Kodituwakku could not hand over the nominations, Mr Senanayake said he was ignorant of the relevant remark and added that he hoped Mr. Kodituwakku would join with him in the upcoming election period.
