Chief Lekakadikari of the Asgiri Chapter, Ven. Dr. Medagama Dhammananda Thera, said today it was most suited for Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to step down immediately giving the opportunity to President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to govern the country according to his policies.
The Thera told media that the Prime Minister should resign from his ministerial portfolios as well. “The President should be given the opportunity to govern the country according to his objectives. The blessings of the Maha Sangha will always be with the new President. The Sinhala Buddhists were disappointed over the harassment on Maha Sangha and due to the claims that this country was not a Buddhist country,” the Thera said.
The United National Party (UNP) had to face the repercussions of undermining Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage and insulting the Maha Sangha. “The repercussion of the moves had to be borne by the candidate who contested under UNP,” the Thera said. The Thera said they did not expect a general election which would violate the constitution or create public turmoil and added that everything should be done upholding unitary status of the country.
