Colombo, October 10 (Daily Mirror) - In the wake of the tragic incident where a 16-year-old girl fell to her death from the Lotus Tower, mental health experts are urging parents to be more attentive to the emotional well-being of their children.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Saman Weerawardana emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of depression early as many adolescents struggle in silence.
“One of the critical tips is that parents getting aware of changes in their child's behavior, such as deviating from friends and family, sudden mood swings,” Dr. Weerawardana pointed out.
He also expressed concern about persistent sadness or irritability lasting more than two weeks, a lack of interest in hobbies or socializing, and sudden changes in sleep patterns, appetite, or school performance. He also warned that talks about feeling hopeless or wanting to escape from life should not be ignored.
“It is also vital to maintain open communication with children. Parents should create an environment where their children feel safe to talk about their emotions,” the expert explained.
He stated, “The teenage years are particularly difficult. Many adolescents feel overwhelmed, and if parents don’t step in early, their children may struggle to cope.”
As such, the expert urged parents to seek attention of the medical expert or contact ‘1926’ hotline if they notice signs similar to these in their children.
“Tragedies of this nature could be avoided if children receive the support they need at the right time, Dr. Weerawardana added.
