Petition against Ranjan’s candidacy at General Elections dismissed

Colombo, October 30 (Daily Mirror) -  A Fundamental Rights petition filed challenging Ranjan Ramanayake from contesting the parliamentary election scheduled for November 14, was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Kumudini Wickremasinghe, and Achala Wengappuli, decided to dismiss the petition, taking into consideration the objections raised by the respondent parties.

Mahinda Senanayake, an independent candidate contesting the General Elections from the Gampaha District filed this petition challenging the Election Commission's decision to accept the nomination paper submitted by Ranjan Ramanayake to contest the upcoming General Elections from the Gampaha District.

The petitioner alleged that Ranjan Ramanayake is disqualified to be elected as a member of Parliament since he was convicted by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court on January 12, 2021, on charges of contempt of court and sentenced to four years rigorous imprisonment.
