Rejection of nomination papers tendered by DNA challenged in court

Colombo, October 22 (Daily Mirror) -  The candidates fielded by the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) for the Vanni District filed a Writ Application before the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the Vanni District Returning Officer to reject the nomination papers tendered by the DNA for the Vanni district.

The Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Shiran Gunaratne and Achala Wengappuli fixed the matter to be mentioned tomorrow (23) for the judgment (reasons) to be pronounced in Court.

The petitioners stated that by letter dated 14 October 2024 the Returning Officer notified that the nomination was rejected under and in terms of Section 19 (1) (a) of the Parliamentary Elections Act for not having met the requirements stipulated under Section 15 (4) and 15 (5) of the Parliamentary Elections Act.

M.U.M Ali Sabry PC with Naamiq Nafath, Shehani De Alwis and Suranaga Perera appeared for the petitioners, instructed by Sanath Wijewardane, while Yuresha De Silva DSG appeared for the Election Commission.
