August 27 - Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Nairobi, Kenya Kana Kananathan participated at the unveiling of the African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson nominee, Raila Odinga.
The event, organized by Kenyan President William Ruto, was held at State House Kenya and attended by three African Heads of State from Uganda, Tanzania, and South Sudan, alongside a former Head of State of Nigeria, highlighting the importance of this candidacy for Africa’s future.
Representing Sri Lanka, High Commissioner Kananathan expressed his pride in being part of this critical moment in Africa's diplomatic and political evolution. He praised Mr. Odinga for his steadfast dedication to pan-African ideals and his vision for a more cohesive and empowered Africa.
The African Union (AU) is a pan-African organization consisting of 55 member countries across the continent. Formed in 2002, following the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the AU aims to foster deeper political and economic unity among African nations. The AU plays a vital role in conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and promoting sustainable development across Africa. The AU Commission, as the executive arm, is responsible for executing the AU’s strategies and coordinating its activities.
Raila Odinga is a distinguished Kenyan politician with a long-standing and illustrious career. He served as Kenya's Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and remains a central figure in the nation's political arena. Renowned for his commitment to democracy, social justice, and pan-Africanism, Odinga has also significantly contributed to peacebuilding efforts in the East African region.
