Sri Lanka were docked one ICC World Cup Super League point for maintaining a slow over rate in the first ODI against New Zealand last week, another blow to their chances of securing an automatic qualification spot for the Cricket World Cup.
Sri Lanka are currently ninth in the Super League points table, on 81 points, and need South Africa to lose both their ODIs to the Netherlands to move into eighth place and secure the final direct qualification spot.
Dasun Shanaka’s team were docked 20 percent of their match fees in accordance with the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct, and since the captain accepted the charges there was no need for a formal hearing.
One place behind Sri Lanka are South Africa on 78 points and are favourites to qualify for the Cricket World Cup, but Ireland, who are tenth, can secure the final qualification spot if they beat Bangladesh 3-0 and secure a better net run rate.
