Colombo, June 26 (Daily Mirror) - All Sri Lankans living in Kenya are safe, with the Sri Lankan High Commission in Nairobi closely monitoring the situation, an official said.

Foreign media reported that thousands of protesters stormed Kenya’s parliament on Tuesday to protest tax proposals, burning part of the building, sending lawmakers fleeing and drawing fire from police.

Asked about the situation, Sri Lankan High Commissioner Kana Kananathan said there were some isolated incidents involving protestors opposing the recently proposed finance bill, which was passed by Parliament. The bill aims to raise an additional USD 2.7 billion in taxes for the 2024–2025 fiscal year.

“I confirm that all our Sri Lankans are safe and there is no alarming situation. We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as needed,” High Commissioner Kananathan said
