In response, the airline said that they prioritized the safety and well-being of passengers onboard, offering them the option to disembark in Mattala or remain onboard to fly to BIA.

The aircraft remained grounded at Mattala as the operating crew had exceeded their flight duty time limit per civil aviation regulations. Additionally, the flight's departure from Singapore was delayed by approximately five hours due to technical issues. The flight departed for BIA at 10:00hrs this morning with a new crew, they said.

SriLankan Airlines expressed deep regret for any inconvenience caused by the technical delay and subsequent diversion, emphasizing that these actions were necessary to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew members. Efforts are underway to assist affected passengers in reaching their final destinations promptly, the SriLankan said.
