Tourism sector gathers steam to host FIFA World Cup 2022 fans in November

Tourism industry stakeholders are in full gear to host the overflow of fans coming into the FIFA World Cup 2022 that will take place in Doha in November.

Tourism Minister Harin Fernando met with Negombo Hotel Owners on Friday (October 7) to initiate the planning of converting the city into a carnival to lure spectators of the world cup in between matches.

Mirror Business learns that a committee has been appointed by the minister to take the lead in the effort so that destination Sri Lanka is pitched accordingly as a more economical option to reside in during the games.
A six-member committee has been appointed to look into the beautification of Negombo city, and ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place to allow FIFA fans to experience Sri Lanka to the fullest. 

The committee, which is chaired by Sri Lanka Conventions Bureau (SLCB) Chairman Thisum Jayasuriya, is tasked with looking at uplifting the ambiance of the city to be more vibrant, food, beverage, accommodation, and entertainment.

Speaking to Mirror Business, The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) President M. Shanthikumar said the hotel sector is fully onboard the idea and is hopeful of it being a success.

When questioned about the feasibility of the idea being effective, given that Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, popular tourism hotspots, are well equipped and geared to pull the FIFA spectators into its borders, Shanthikumar said Sri Lanka will be promoting itself as the most economical option.

“Yes, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are getting ready as well. But still, just as in Doha, the accommodation rates are very expensive. Different segments will be coming in for FIFA, and Sri Lanka will be focusing on the segment that is looking for an economical stay,” he stressed.

“Even with airfare included, Sri Lanka is a highly affordable option. Our market rates are well below the discounted rates offered by Doha, and its neighbouring countries. Sri Lanka is an excellent and feasible option for FIFA fans to consider,” added Shanthi Kumar.

Packages for FIFA 2022 fans have already been conceptualised. Tour operators shared that the starting price of the package for world-cup spectators will be US$ 235 per person-sharing double for four days and three nights with a three-star hotel in Colombo.

For accommodation, at a four-star hotel, the package will be increased to US$ 295 for the same duration, and for a five-star hotel, the charges will go up to US$ 330. (SAA)
