While saying that the presidential election was not the end of their political journey but the beginning, presidential candidate and former Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake said they as a group of intellectuals and professionals with the National People’s Party would contest any election in time to come including the general elections.

Addressing a news briefing yesterday, he said the general elections were going to be a different election in comparison to the presidential election and added there were many things to come.

“We are in the position that this is not the end but the beginning. We will be marching from here towards the victory of the people,” he said.

“We, as a group of new entrants to politics, always stand for right. We are here to ensure that the people’s aspirations are taken into consideration and taken care of", he added.

He requested the countrymen to understand their endeavours as there was no personal motive behind their journey but a motive of working for the betterment of the people.

While congratulating the newly elected President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, he said as long as the new president and his cabinet does the right in terms of the people, they will be with them.

Meanwhile, he expressed his sincere thanks to everyone who voted for him and having confidence in their policies and who believed that the country needs a change in terms of system and the political culture.

“Our team will continue to work on changing this political culture, which ruined the county for the past 72 years, he added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
