The current economic performance of Sri Lanka was given a special praise during the biannual summit of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank at Washington DC, which concluded yesterday, a Finance Ministry statement said, quoting Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake. According to the statement, Minister Karunanayake participated in the ‘G24 Finance Ministers’ Meeting’ and the current economic performance of Sri Lanka was discussed during the meeting. It also said the first post of Vice President of the G24 Finance Ministers Council was offered to Minister Karunanayake. “This is a big achievement of the country,” Minister Karunanayake was quoted as saying.
The statement further said Minister Karunanayake’s discussions with IMF Deputy Managing Director Mitsuhiro Furasawa were successful.
Minister Karunanayake had also met World Bank Vice Chairman Annette Dixon and during the meeting she had praised the economic performance of
Sri Lanka.
Dixon also had said that the World Bank and International Development Institute would assist Sri Lanka further in the future to continue with its development. The World Bank had promised to send a special team to Sri Lanka to inspect solid waste management in relation to the recent Meethotamulla tragedy.
On the sidelines of the biannual summit, Minister Karunanayake and his delegation had also held successful discussions with Chairperson of US Federal Reserve Janet Yellen and other senior US Treasury officials.
The Sri Lankan delegation led by Minister Ravi Karunanayake included Treasury Secretary Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunga, several senior officials attached to the Finance Ministry and the Sri Lanka Central Bank.
