U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie J. Chung inaugurates the facility flanked by Aitken Spence Logistics CEO Janaka Gunawardena and Sri Lanka Coast Guard Director General Rear Admiral Pujitha Vithana
The recent unveiling of the ‘Ship-in-a-Box’ maritime training simulator by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard represents a significant leap forward in enhancing the nation’s maritime security capabilities.
Funded by the U.S. government and converted and constructed with the expertise of Aitken Spence Logistics, this purpose-built facility is set to improve the operational effectiveness of Sri Lanka’s maritime forces.
The simulator, constructed from standard shipping containers, has been meticulously converted to replicate the bridge of a merchant vessel. This realistic training environment provides essential experience for personnel from the Sri Lanka Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies, enabling them to practice the visit, board, search and seizure operations in conditions that closely mimic the real-world scenarios.
Aitken Spence Logistics played a pivotal role in this project by transforming the shipping containers into a fully functional training facility. Leveraging advanced design features and deep expertise in container conversion, Aitken Spence Logistics ensured that the facility meets both local training needs and international maritime standards. Aitken Spence Logistics CEO Janaka Gunawardena said, “We are proud to have been a key contributor to the Ship-in-a-Box project. Our role in converting these containers into a purpose-built training simulator reflects our commitment to supporting national security initiatives and enhancing operational readiness. This project is a testament to our ability to deliver innovative logistics solutions that align with global best practices.”
The Ship-in-a-Box initiative underscores the successful collaboration between the Sri Lanka Coast Guard and U.S. government. This partnership has not only provided essential funding but also brought in valuable technical insights and strategic guidance, reflecting a shared commitment to maintaining stability and security in the Indian Ocean region.
The simulator addresses critical maritime challenges such as piracy, smuggling and human trafficking, equipping Sri Lanka’s maritime forces with the skills required to counter these threats effectively. By providing high-quality, realistic training, the facility plays a crucial role in safeguarding Sri Lanka’s sovereign waters and enhancing regional security.
