The apron area development project at the BIA, which will increase the aircraft parking facility, is slated to reach completion by November 2021.

While the BIA has a capacity of parking 26 aircraft at present, under the expansion effort the apron area of BIA will be expanded to facilitate another new 23 apron parking stands for aircraft parking, increasing the aircraft parking capacity to 49.

The new apron at the BIA will be equipped with apron floodlights,  flexible pavement connecting taxiways and taxiway lights, aerodrome ground lighting, and signage, shared State Minister D. V. Chanaka via a statement yesterday.

Currently, the final Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) Asphalt Surface Course is taking place and will be completed by next month.

Chanaka stated that by increasing these capacities, BIA will be able to meet the future demand of the aviation industry and will be able to contribute “immensely” to the socio-economic development of the country.
