August tea exports down 2.47 MnKgs from previous year

The tea exports for the month of August 2022 totalled 23.01 MnKgs, showing a year-on-year (YoY) decrease of 2.47 MnKgs when compared with the August 2021 export volumes. The tea report by Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers highlighted that all categories have shown a negative variance when compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. For the January-August 2022 period, the cumulative exports totalled 171.06 MnKgs, an 8.80 percent decrease from the volumes achieved in January-August 2021.

Here again, all categories have witnessed a decline in comparison with the corresponding period of 2021.
Iraq has remained the major importer of Ceylon Tea, with an increase of 31 percent in imports YoY for January-August 2022. Russia has secured the second position, with a total of 14.98 MnKgs, which is a 19 percent decrease against the total imports recorded for January-August 2021. 


The UAE sits in the third place, with a total of 14.78 MnKgsm, followed by Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan and Libya for the period January-August 2022.  A significant decrease in imports is reported from Turkey (58 percent), China (20 percent), Syria (23 percent), Japan (12 percent) and Jordon (21 percent) YoY.  However, a notable increase in imports is recorded from Azerbaijan (7 percent), Germany (8 percent), the USA (7 percent), Saudi Arabia (4 percent) and Poland (15 percent) YoY as expanding markets for Ceylon Tea.
