Bhutan has been chosen as the Lonely Planet’s number one tourist destination to visit in 2020 due to its majestic beauty and plans to become the first fully organic nation.

Lonely Planet named Sri Lanka as the number one tourist destination to visit in 2019 and maintained the ranking even after the Easter bombings in April.

The list, featured in the Best in Travel 2020 book, was compiled based on “topicality, unique experiences and wow factor”.

Bhutan is followed by England, North Macedonia, Aruba, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Costa Rica, The Netherlands, Liberia, Morocco and Uruguay.

“With all visitors required to pay a daily fee to be in the incredible kingdom in the Himalayas, it delivers on exclusivity. The kingdom is already carbon neutral but also plans to be the first fully-organic nation by 2020, making it the perfect time to plan a visit,” Lonely Planet’s Bhutan entry stated.

The leading travel publisher also revealed its top picks of cities, regions and best-value destinations to visit in 2020.
