China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) has secured a bid to design, supply and install transmission lines and sections under the Package No.04 of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded US$ 119 million ‘Supporting Electricity Supply Reliability
Improvement’ project.
Based on recommendation of the Cabinet-appointed Standing Procurement Committee following an international bidding process,
Power Minister Gamini Lokuge on Monday sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to award the contract to CMEC.
Under the package four of the project, CMEC is tasked with the construction of 33kV lines and gantries.
The ADB-funded project is expected to provide electricity to about 35,710 rural households, including the former conflict-affected Northern and Eastern provinces as well as Uva and North Central provinces where the current electrification level is lower than in other parts of the country.
Further, it also expects to improve the medium voltage network and the quality and reliability of electricity supply to more than 493,000 consumers.
