The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) yesterday achieved a major milestone as the market capitalisation crossed the Rs.6 trillion mark for the first time in history.
The CSE ended trading yesterday with a market capitalisation of Rs.6.04 trillion.
The market participants cheered the settlement of US$ 500 million sovereign bond, which the Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal announced in a twitter message yesterday.
As a result, the shares closed at an all-time high with the main All Share Price Index gaining as much as 0.89 percent to close at 13, 457.20, while the more liquid S&P SL20 index gained 1.39 percent to close at
4, 618.45.
The day’s turnover was Rs.7.1 billion. Trading volume inched up to 256.7 million shares, from 252.6 million shares in the previous session.
Conglomerates Expolanka Holdings and Vallibel One were the top boosts to the index, closing 2.6 percent and 10.4 percent higher respectively.
Foreign investors ended as net buyers in the equity market yesterday, purchasing shares worth Rs.198.1 million.
