Cabinet approves move to amend CAA Act

The Cabinet of Ministers earlier this week gave approval for the preparation of a new bill to amend the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Act of No.9 of 2003. 


Based on the observations of the Attorney General, the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Nalin Fernando had proposed the amendment to the CAA Act at the Cabinet meeting.


Accordingly, the legal draftsmen had been advised to begin drafting the amendment bill, immediately.
The Consumer Affairs Authority Act of Sri Lanka is responsible for promoting and protecting consumer rights and interests in the country. 


Enacted from 9th January2003, the Act has the power to regulate prices, quality, safety of goods and services, investigate consumer complaints, and enforce consumer protection laws.


The implementation of  CAA is overseen by the Consumer Affairs Authority which comes under the purview of the Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade.
