The Cabinet nod has been granted to recognise the country’s cinema trade as an industry officially with a view to promote and gain international recognition for the sector.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs and Minister of Industries Wimal Weerawansa presented a joint proposal on Monday seeking the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers for registering the cinema industry officially as
an industry. According to Co-Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister of Mass Media Dullas Alahapperuma, the contribution of the cinema industry to the GDP stood at Rs.1.9 billion in 2019.
He pointed out that the recognition of Indian cinema industry dominated by Bollywood has played a key role for its current success, similar to most
other countries.
The Government Information Department also highlighted the potential of the industry in supporting other key sectors as well as enhancing its overall contribution to the national economy.
“The local cinema industry confronted crises with the outbreak of COVID– 19 global pandemic situations.
It has been recognised that a number of benefits such as the generation of many livelihoods, occurrence of social and cultural as well as economic modification and boost to tourism and education sectors etc. can be achieved through improvement and promotion of the cinema industry,” it elaborated.
