The Sri Lankan government will be organising facilities for Ceylon Tea to be sold at auctions held in China, according to one of the Cabinet decisions taken this week.
“For the promotion of Sri Lankan tea in the People’s Republic of China, it was decided to prepare a proper programme in this regard and to enter into an agreement for holding tea auctions in China,” a Cabinet spokesperson said.  Plantation Industries Minister Navin Dissanayake had made the proposal due to the increasing consumption of black tea in China.

China absorbed just US $ 32 million of Ceylon Tea in 2016, which was just 2.5 percent of Sri Lanka’s total tea exports during last year. It was a fall from US $ 34 million worth of tea exported to China in 2015, which was the highest ever.
