The applications for Chevening Scholarships, the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations to study in the UK, are open for Sri Lankan students, the British High Commission Sri Lanka announced yesterday.

The prospective candidates can submit their applications between August 6 and November 5, 2024, via chevening.org/apply.

Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals from diverse backgrounds who can demonstrate the commitment and skills needed to become future leaders. The applicants must have a realistic and achievable idea to create positive change in their country and be able to demonstrate how a UK master’s degree will help them bring their idea to life.

Sri Lanka Ambassador Andrew Patrick said, “The Chevening scholars have gone on to play a leading role in many areas of Sri Lankan society. After studying in the UK, as a Chevening scholar, you will be well-equipped to start making a real difference. Apply before the deadline on November 5, 2024 and you could be part of this extraordinary community.”

Since the programme started in 1983, over 57,000 professionals have advanced their careers through Chevening. For the 2025/2026 academic year, approximately 1500 awards are available globally, demonstrating the UK’s commitment to developing the leaders of tomorrow.

2023 Chevening scholar Minul Muhamdiramge from Sri Lanka, studying a master’s in dispute resolution (LLM) at Queen Mary University of London said, “Chevening Scholarship offers a unique opportunity to experience life in the UK, connect with likeminded individuals and share ideas that make a difference. As a Chevening scholar, you write your own powerful story, which is what makes being part of the Chevening community so interesting. Everyone is crafting his or her own narrative and sometimes you get to be part of each other’s stories. Studying in the UK for your master’s is not just about academics; it’s a chance to discover yourself and your potential. Being in London allowed me to connect with numerous professionals, providing firsthand insights into what I can achieve and offering valuable opportunities for professional growth.”

The scholarship offers full financial support for the scholars to pursue any eligible master’s degree at over 150 UK universities, along with access to a wide range of exclusive academic, professional and cultural experiences.
