The Cabinet of Ministers has agreed to award the contract for the expansion of the existing sewerage facilities under the Ratmalana/Moratuwa Wastewater Disposal Project Stage 1 - Phase II to China-GEO Engineering Corporation, which is co-funded by the Chinese government and the French Agency for Development (AFD).

Water Supply Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara sought the approval of the Cabinet to award the tender to China–GEO Engineering Corporation based on the recommendations of the Cabinet appointed procurement committee after evaluating 7 bids.

The six-year Ratmalana/Moratuwa Wastewater Disposal Project commenced in early 2019 after securing EUR 75 million from AFD. The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has been appointed to implement the project based on the project design plan developed with the support of an AFD-financed engineering consultant.

The project aims at improving access to the sewerage service for 45,000 residents of Ratmalana and Moratuwa including significant extension of the sewerage network to over 10,000 domestic, commercial and industrial connections.
