Chinese firm wins contract for pilot smart metering project

China’s Yantai Dongfang Wisdom Electric Co. Ltd has been selected to roll out the pilot smart metering project targeting 50,000 electricity consumers in Dehiwala for Rs.937.91 million.

Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to award the contract to Yantai Dongfang Wisdom Electric Co. Ltd to implement smart metering systems targeting 50,000 electricity consumers in the Dehiwala area, based on  the recommendation of the Standing Procurement Committee appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers. The Government Information Department noted that five bids had been submitted under  international competitive bidding system for planning, supply, installation, inspection and initiation of infrastructure facilities for the programme.

The pilot project is being implemented with assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), according o Wijesekera .

Under the project, electricity customers would be given smart bills in the form of e- bills and SMSs without manual reading.
