Colombo Christmas Street 2017 opens to public today

Colombo Christmas Street 2017 is set to take place from today to December 23, at Green Path, offering a whole new concept in entertainment for the second consecutive year. 

The event is organised by the Sri Lanka Retailers’ Association in collaboration with the Tourism Development Ministry and Sri Lanka Apparel Brands Association.

The seasonal programme will feature up to 65 trade stalls selling a variety of gift items, local crafts, consumer electronics, hampers and a variety of products. A food festival with 30 stalls run by the city’s top favourites will also feature a wide range of local delicacies and seasonal favourites. A fun array of entertainment and games will create a carnival-style ambiance in the heart of the city.

The daily programme will commence at 11:00 a.m. and continue till 11:00 p.m. Entertainment includes a children’s play area, bouncers and much more. Several social awareness stalls will also be run to promote their work and activities. These include My Friends and Fight Cancer Team.

Up to three choirs are scheduled to perform each day from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and thereafter live bands and DJs will perform along with several guest artistes until 11:00 p.m. DJs will also be playing an array of festive songs and upbeat music from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Colombo Christmas Street Project Chairman Mehraj Sally said leading bands in Sri Lanka ‘Flame, Expression and Rumours are to play on these three days. Sri Lankan-born Alston Koch will also make a guest appearance on the opening day. President Maithripala Sirisena will be inaugurating the event in the evening. 

The entire Green Path stretch will be decorated in sparkling fairy lights and seasonal décor, making it the ideal venue for families to explore, spend time together and pick up last minute Christmas presents. The street will serve as a central entertainment spot in the city, offering fun activities and delights for the whole family.
