The Ministry of Tourism announced this weekend that the local insurance cover at US$ 12 premium for inbound visitors has been increased to US$ 75,000 from the previous US$ 50,000. Under the increased cover, tourists will be able to receive a wider range of benefits.

The extended cover provides a total of eleven facilities to tourists. The cover includes; hospitalization, intensive c a r e , q u a r a n t i n e facilities, intermediary care, laboratory testing, transport, flight rescheduling, and repatriation of mortal remains, among others.

The Covid-19 coverage is subject to proof of negative results of the PCR done within 72 hours prior to boarding the flight.

However, fully vaccinated travellers having a history of infection within the last three months could arrive with a negative Covid-19 Rapid Antigen Test/PCR Test report done within 48 hours prior to embarkation.

The validity period of this insurance cover is for the initial 30 days from the arrival date in Sri Lanka, unless extended through People’s Insurance with payment of an extra premium prior to the expiry of the existing insurance cover.

The Sri Lanka Tourism D e v e l o p m e n t A u t h o r i t y (SLTDA) shared in a notice that the cover can be extended up to 60 additional days where for each 30-day period a charge of US$ 9 applies.

Furthermore, any other claims for PCR or other tests/drugs owing to COVID-19 while staying in a government-approved quarantine hotel should be only under the strict prescription of a Ministry of Health-approved Medical Officer.

All claims should be supported by documents as required by People’s Insurance including hotel accommodation (Check-in and Checkout) and medical doctor recommendation/ prescriptions (as applicable).

The insurance should also be activated on or before the arrival date.
