The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) announced yesterday the formulation of a Vocational Education Training Plan (VET Plan) for the electrical and electronics sector (EEC sector), to pave the way for further development in the country’s electrical and electronics industry.
The plan was conceptualised with the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC), to address the current shortages in the industry and human resources requirements.
The plan, which will be implemented in the next five years, aims to improve the supply of semi-skilled and skilled professionals to satisfy the needs of the electronics and electrical manufacturing sector, so that the sales and profits can be boosted.
At present, the sector mainly caters for the automobiles, telecommunication, consumer electronics, industrial automation and medical sectors.
The electrical and electronics industry is identified as a key sector in the National Exports Strategy (NES), since it is the seventh largest merchandise export revenue earner of the country. The local industry consists of more than 85 companies and over 35000 employees.
