The European Union (EU) reaffirmed its commitment to Sri Lanka yesterday, recognising the island as a valued partner in trade and investment while pledging its continued support for its economic recovery.

In a statement to the media, the EU congratulated President Dissanayake on his victory in the September 21 Presidential Election and praised Sri Lanka for its strong democratic engagement, reflected in the high voter turnout and the peaceful conclusion of the process.

“By invitation of the authorities of Sri Lanka, the EU deployed an Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to undertake an independent, impartial and technical assessment of all aspects of the electoral process. This further reflects EU’s close cooperation with Sri Lanka on good governance and democracy,” the EU said in a statement.
The Union noted that its Election Observation Mission found that the election process upheld fundamental freedoms, with the Election Commission of Sri Lanka (ECSL) ensuring transparency at all key stages.
However, the mission did identify areas for further improvement such as enhancing the transparency in political financing and promoting greater participation of women in public and political life.

A detailed final report with recommendations is set to be published soon.

Moreover, the EU went on to emphasise Sri Lanka as one of its significant trade and investment partners and highlighted the importance of continued joint efforts to uphold governance, human rights and climate action.
“Sri Lanka is an important and valued partner of the EU.  We look forward to working with President Dissanayake and continue EU’s support to Sri Lanka’s reforms to bring the country to economic recovery, lasting reconciliation and inclusive prosperity and growth,”the statement said.
