Gem and jewellery sector commends move to simplify export processes

The streamlined export process for the gem and jewellery sector was commended by the industry stakeholders, as the simplified steps would allow improved sales.

The new process will thus enable the exports under US $ 3,000 to be fast-tracked via a new digital platform and allow the exporters to ship directly from their own locations without the need to physically visit the Gem Authority.
“The gem and jewellery industry as a whole stands to benefit from such technological transformations, which are commonplace in nearly all other industries, as they present a more efficient and equitable opportunity for our exporters to compete in international markets,” Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA) said in a statement to the media this week.

Over the past two years, the SLGJA lobbied for simpler and more efficient export processes, which are presently too long and unviable for exporters, due to the nature of online sales, where parcels of smaller value are sold and shipped to multiple international addresses.

The association commended the government, especially Gem and Jewellery Related Industries State Minister Lohan Ratwatta, the ministry secretary, National Gem and Jewellery Authority and Sri Lanka Customs.
The Sri Lankan gem and jewellery industry, like many others, faced significant challenges with the onset of COVID-19.

The SME sector in particular suffered from a lack of tourism and reduced exports as well as from irregular mining and lapidary operations.

The association stressed that its persistent efforts to bring awareness and relief to those affected, however, have now borne fruit.
